Gravel driveway installation is two layers of rock over graded ground. Base rock goes down first. That is bigger crushed stone with the fines left in, and it packs tight and carries the weight. A smaller top gravel goes over it for the driving surface.
The ground has to be right before any rock is spread. We grade the path flat, fill the soft spots and shape the middle higher than the sides. Then the gravel goes on and gets graded even.
Driveway gravel names change from one pit to the next in Arkansas. You will hear SB2, crusher run, base rock and creek gravel for material that looks the same. What matters is that the base has fines in it so the stone locks up. Rounded creek gravel rolls under a tire and never packs.
It comes down to the dirt under it. Out in the Delta around Monette, Manila and Trumann, the ground is flat and heavy with clay. Water does not soak away fast, so it stands on the drive. A drive on Delta clay needs a real crown and somewhere for that water to run.
On Crowley's Ridge through Jonesboro, Paragould and Harrisburg, the soil is loess and the ground rolls. Water drains better there, but it also runs downhill fast. A drive on a grade cuts ruts down the middle. Shaping it to shed water to the sides is what stops that.
Traffic is the other half. A drive a farm truck or a loaded trailer uses wears faster than one that sees a car. Gravel works down into the ground and gets pushed to the edges. Every drive wants fresh rock and a regrade at some point.
Most of what gravel driveway contractors get called for here is not a new drive. It is one gone to potholes, or worn to bare dirt where the rock used to be. We regrade the whole run flat first, then add gravel back where it is thin.
Gravel driveway repair starts with a regrade. The hole gets cut back so the patch ties into the drive around it. A patch that only fills the dip pops open again the next wet week. A washout gets filled with base rock and regraded so water quits running through that spot.
Brush closing in from both sides is part of it more often than people think. A drive that stays wet is one that never sees sun or wind. Cutting the brush back off the edges lets it dry and gives a truck room to get by.
