Lawrence County farms rice, soybeans, corn and sorghum. Row crop ground stays clean because it gets worked every year. The trouble starts on the edges. Ditch banks, turn rows, field corners and fence lines get skipped, and in three or four seasons they are a thicket.
The bottoms along the Black River grew timber long before they grew crops. Willow, cottonwood and sweetgum come back there on their own. On the higher ground west of the river, eastern red cedar is the one that takes a field. Cedar starts small and quiet. Once it is over head high a mower will not touch it.

Water shapes clearing work in this county. On January 2, 2023 the National Weather Service logged flash flooding that put roads in and around Walnut Ridge and Hoxie under water. Heavy rain pushed the Black River out of its banks at Black Rock in early January that year, and again in March.
Wet ground changes how a job runs. A tract in the bottoms can sit soft for days after a rain. Mulching in place helps, because nothing has to be trucked back and forth across soft dirt. We look at access and ground conditions when we come out. Sometimes the right answer is to wait a week and let it firm up.
If the tract is in a mapped flood area, grading and filling count as development. Arkansas communities in the flood insurance program have a floodplain administrator who handles that permit. Ask the city or the county office before dirt gets moved. Dirt work and grading after a clearing job is easier to plan once you know where you stand.
Walnut Ridge and Hoxie run together as one built-up area. US-63 and US-67 cross each other in Hoxie. US-412 comes through Walnut Ridge on Main Street, and US-67 runs a four-lane bypass along the east side of town. College City, now part of Walnut Ridge, holds Williams Baptist University on ground that came from the old Walnut Ridge Army Flying School.

We come over from Monette on AR-18 to Jonesboro, then north on US-63 into Hoxie and Walnut Ridge. Places out in the county run long drives off a gravel road. Putting in a gravel driveway or regraveling a worn one goes with a lot of the clearing we do here. A new entrance onto a state highway goes through the highway department district permit office, and a county road tie-in goes through the county road department.
Straight-line wind does a lot of the damage around here. On July 18, 2023 a thunderstorm gust estimated near 60 mph blew trees down onto power lines at Alicia. Ice takes limbs down in winter, and a spring line of storms can drop trees across a driveway overnight.
Storm cleanup here means downed trees, limbs and brush piles. We cut them up, pick them up with the grapple and haul them out on the dump trailer. Driveways and lots get opened back up first so people can get in and out. A damaged tree still standing is a tree service call, not ours.
Burning is the other question after a storm. Arkansas counties go under burn bans when it turns dry, and the county judge puts those on. State open burning rules come from the Department of Environmental Quality, and a local fire department can require a permit on top of that. Brush we take goes into mulch on the ground or out on the trailer.
