Paragould sits on the east edge of Crowley's Ridge, and that puts two kinds of land in one town. Up on the Ridge you get rolling wooded ground, oak and hickory timber and thick underbrush. Head east off the Ridge and it flattens into Delta row-crop ground. Ditch banks and fence rows out there grow up solid in a season or two.

Crowley's Ridge is a narrow band of windblown silt called loess. It runs about 150 miles from southeast Missouri down to Helena. The band is half a mile to twelve miles wide. Paragould sits right on its east edge, and that soil washes easily once the cover comes off.
That is a good reason to mulch the brush in place. The drum mulcher grinds saplings and underbrush right where they stand. What is left behind is a layer of chips sitting on the dirt. On a Ridge slope that matters the first hard rain after a clearing job.
The Ridge timber is oak and hickory, with tulip trees and beech mixed in. The mulcher takes brush, saplings and small trees. Larger timber is something we look at when we come price the job. The grapple and the dump trailer move out whatever cannot be ground up.
US-412 runs east out of Paragould. Nine miles out it reaches the Missouri line at the St. Francis River. That stretch is flat Delta farmland, with turn rows and drainage ditches. Fence rows and ditch banks out there fill in with cedar, sweetgum saplings and briars.
West of the Ridge the Cache River runs south through Greene County. That side is bottomland, with sloughs, swampy spots and oxbows off the old channel. Ground like that stays soft, so we pick our days on it. Willow and cottonwood come back quick down in the bottoms.
Open field and pasture gone to tall grass and briars is a cutter job. Bush hogging with the brush cutter on the skid steer takes that down in a pass. When cedar and saplings have gotten ahead of a cutter, the mulcher goes first. Pastures, fence lines and shooting lanes on hunting land get cleared the same way.
Paragould counted 29,537 people in the 2020 Census and is estimated near 31,000 now. The city added about 400 residents in the past year. That put it in the top ten fastest growing cities in Arkansas. Greene County runs close to 47,000, with roughly 16,000 of those outside the city limits.
Subdivisions like Sierra Hills off Mockingbird Lane and Summit Ridge off Barnhill Road keep filling in. Plenty of buyers skip a town lot and take acreage out toward Oak Grove Heights, Lafe or Walcott. Wooded acreage has to be opened up before a house, shop or barn goes on it. We handle the clearing and the rough grading to get a lot ready for the builder.
Call Arkansas 811 before anything gets dug, and have the survey stakes set. The city Planning and Development office on West Court Street handles zoning, subdivision plats and the flood damage prevention code. Outside the city limits, the county judge's office at the courthouse is the place to ask. The builder's excavator digs the foundation once we are out of the way.
A drive up on the Ridge has slope working against it, and one down in the Delta has clay. Both wash out or go soft when the crown is wrong. Gravel driveways get shaped so water runs off the surface and into the ditch. Regraveling an old farm or hunting road works the same way.
The Greene County Road Department on Fairview Road is who to ask about a county road entrance. If the drive ties into a state highway, that one goes through ARDOT. Rules on culverts and entrance permits change, so check with them before the gravel shows up.
We come over from Monette on AR-18 to Lake City, then north on AR-135 into Paragould. Storm work gets the same trip. Downed trees, limbs and brush piles are cut up, grappled and hauled out on the dump trailer. Dirt work and fence line clearing run off the same machine.
