Land Clearing, Mulching and Dirt Work for Manila Property Owners

Land around Manila does not stay open on its own. A field on Buffalo Island goes one season without a cutter and the ditch banks fill in. Cedar and sweetgum get a start on the higher ground. Willow and cottonwood take the wet edges down toward Big Lake. A few years of that and the back of the place is a thicket you cannot walk through.

Craig Land Management handles land clearing in Manila and the rest of Mississippi County. We are based in Monette, about 10 miles west of town, and we come over on AR-18 through Leachville. Here the work runs to clearing overgrown land, forestry mulching, bush hogging, dirt work and gravel drives. Call (870) 351-5107 and we will set up a free estimate.

Clearing Delta ground on Buffalo Island

Manila sits on Buffalo Island in Mississippi County. That is the local name for the ground between the Little River and the St. Francis River, south of Big Lake. Manila, Leachville, Black Oak, Caraway and Monette all sit on it. Herman Davis State Park, the smallest state park in Arkansas, is right in town off Baltimore Street.

This is flat row-crop country. Mississippi County ranked first in the state for cotton sales in the USDA farm census. Soybeans, rice, wheat and sorghum go in around it. Between the fields sit turn rows, ditch banks, field edges and small patches of bottomland timber.

Those edges are where brush wins. Delta clay holds water, so the low spots stay wet and grow up fast. A drum mulcher grinds brush and small trees into mulch right where they stand. The mulch stays on the ground and breaks down over the next few seasons.

What does hunting land near Big Lake need?

Big Lake sits just east of Manila. The lake itself is about 2,600 acres of open water. It was set aside as a federal refuge in 1915. Part of it carries a wilderness designation and a National Natural Landmark listing. The refuge allows deer, turkey and squirrel hunting and keeps the water as a waterfowl sanctuary.

Around it, private ground in the bottoms holds the duck holes, the deer camps and the family acreage. Owners out there ask for the same short list. A way in, shooting lanes and trails cut through the thick stuff, and a road that holds up wet.

We clear that kind of ground with the mulcher, the brush cutter and the grapple. Brush and saplings get ground down where they stand. What has to leave the property goes out on the dump trailer. Farm roads and hunting land roads get graded and regraveled the same trip.

Storm cleanup after a Delta tornado

Buffalo Island has taken real storms. On December 10, 2021 a tornado tracked across Monette and Leachville, a few miles from Manila. The National Weather Service rated it EF4, with peak winds near 170 mph and a path over 80 miles long.

A storm like that leaves the same mess on every place. Limbs down across the drive, trees leaning on the fence, brush stacked where the wind put it. Storm cleanup is cutting that up, grappling it into the dump trailer and hauling it off the property.

Ice storms work slower. Wet ice loads the tops of sweetgum and cottonwood until they split. We open the driveway first so you can get in and out. Then we work through the rest of the lot and the field edges.

Burn bans, low ground and the run over from Monette

Mississippi County puts out a burn ban when the county dries out. The state keeps a map of which counties are under one. That matters here, because a brush pile is the usual way people clear a field. We mulch in place, and what cannot be mulched goes out on the dump trailer.

Low ground is the other thing to look at. The Corps of Engineers built the levees around Big Lake in 1938, and the ground behind them runs flat. If your acreage sits low or backs up to a drainage ditch, ask the county before dirt gets moved.

Manila is a short run for us. We are in Monette, about 10 miles west on AR-18 through Leachville. That covers the island towns and on out to Etowah, Dell and the farm ground between them.

Communities and areas we serve around Manila: Big Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Herman Davis State Park, Buffalo Island, Big Lake, Little River, Baltimore Avenue, Airport Road, Leachville, Black Oak, Caraway, Etowah, Dell.

Manila FAQ

Questions From Manila Property Owners

A few of the questions we hear most around Manila. If yours is not here, call and ask.

Call (870) 351-5107

Do you work in Manila and out on Buffalo Island?
Yes. We are based in Monette and come over on AR-18 through Leachville. Manila, Leachville, Black Oak, Caraway, Etowah and Dell are all inside our normal working area. Call (870) 351-5107 and we will come look at the property.
What does land clearing cost in Manila?
It comes down to the ground. Thick brush takes longer than light brush. Bigger trees, a wet lot and more debris to haul all push the job up. Ground near Big Lake and the drainage ditches often sits soft, which slows a machine down. We look at the property and give you a written estimate for free.
Can you clear a field that has gone to cedar and briars?
Yes. The drum mulcher grinds cedar, sweetgum saplings and briars into mulch where they stand. Fence rows and ditch banks get the same treatment. Once a field is open again, bush hogging keeps it from filling back in.
Do you clear hunting land and camp roads around Big Lake?
Yes. Trails, shooting lanes, camp sites and grown-up field edges on private ground are regular work for us. We also grade and regravel the roads that get you back in there. Gravel and grading are quoted with the clearing on the same estimate.
What happens to the brush you cut on my place?
Most of it is mulched in place and left on the ground as a cover. Anything too big for the mulcher gets grappled up and hauled off on the dump trailer. Mississippi County runs burn bans in dry stretches, so the mulcher and the trailer are how we move material.
