Land clearing in Marked Tree, AR means working low, flat ground between two rivers. On the farm ground, turn rows, ditch banks and fence rows grow up in brush and saplings. Duck ground in the river bottoms needs shooting lanes and trails. Closer in, an empty lot goes to vines, and a shop site on the edge of town needs clearing.
Craig Land Management is based in Monette, in Craighead County, and works about 50 miles around Jonesboro. Poinsett County is inside that area, so we come over from Monette for land clearing in and around Marked Tree. We also do forestry mulching, bush hogging, dirt work and gravel driveways here. Marked Tree sits on the St. Francis River at the mouth of the Little River. In places the two rivers run only a quarter mile apart, yet they flow in opposite directions. The south end of the Marked Tree Floodway lies just west of town.
The area marks the southern end of the New Madrid Fault. The ground here sank as much as nine feet in places during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812. After that, these sunken lands flooded every spring. Another earthquake, a magnitude 6.3, struck near town in 1843.
The first steps toward levees came in 1893. Even so, the levees broke and flooded the town in 1912, 1913, 1927 and 1937.
Lot clearing gets a house or shop site on the edge of town ready for the builder. We take out the brush and small trees and rough grade the site, and the builder's excavator digs the foundation. Near the floodway, ask the county or the Corps of Engineers what applies before fill goes in. We can point you to the right office.
Farming and lumber have been the main industries in Marked Tree. Cotton, soybeans, rice and corn are the major crops around town. On fields this flat, brush takes hold in the strips the mower skips. Field corners and old fence rows fill in with briars, vines and saplings.
Bush hogging with the brush cutter takes down tall grass, weeds, briars and light brush on ditch banks. Where saplings have taken hold, the drum mulcher grinds them down. Pasture and fence line clearing opens a fence row back up so a fence can be rebuilt.
Some brush comes back after a cutting. Arkansas Extension says cut privet will still send up sprouts, and birds spread its seed. A fall pass with the brush cutter helps keep a cleared edge open.
In town, brush clearing takes thickets and vines out from around a house or along a back fence. We grind what we can into mulch, and the rest goes out on the dump trailer.
Northwest of town, the Marked Tree Lock and Siphons sit on Lock and Dam Road, open to the public. The Corps of Engineers built the siphons in 1939 to control flooding. Their three steel tubes, each nine feet across, were designed to lift the St. Francis over an earthen levee. The siphons and the lock were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
The Siphons Access, off US 63 near Marked Tree, is one way into the St. Francis Sunken Lands WMA. That Arkansas Game and Fish Commission area takes in land in Greene, Craighead and Poinsett counties. The commission says waterfowl hunting accounts for most of the recreation days there. Its timber is mostly bottomland hardwoods, including oak, hickory, bald cypress, tupelo and pecan.
On private hunting land near the bottoms, forestry mulching opens trails and clears brush around a stand or a blind. The drum mulcher grinds brush and saplings, and the mulch stays where it falls. We look at the larger timber with you on the estimate.
After high wind or an ice storm, limbs and downed trees can block a camp road or a field edge. Storm cleanup means cutting them up, grappling them into piles and hauling them off on the dump trailer.
We come over from Monette on AR 18 west to Black Oak. There, AR 135 runs south through Caraway to Lepanto. From Lepanto, AR 140 leads into Marked Tree, about 27 miles from Monette as the crow flies.
In town, US 63 meets AR 140, 149 and 308. Marked Tree is part of the Jonesboro metro area, and it had 2,286 people at the 2020 Census. We also work around Lepanto and Tyronza, two more Poinsett County towns. Elsewhere in the county, we work in Trumann and Harrisburg.
The town takes its name from a marked tree on the riverbank. A flood carried it into the river in 1890. Marked Tree was incorporated on July 8, 1897.
On a farm road or a long drive across low ground, gravel needs a crown to shed rain. For a gravel driveway, we spread and grade the gravel with the skid steer and patch potholes and washouts. A new entrance onto a county road or US 63 may need a permit first. The county road department or ARDOT handles that, and we can tell you which one to call.
