Land around Wynne comes in two kinds. The west slope of Crowley's Ridge rises on the east side of town, with hardwoods on steep ground. West of town the land flattens toward the L'Anguille River and wide farm fields. A wooded ridge lot and a grown up fence row both need land clearing, but they clear differently.
Craig Land Management is based in Monette, in Craighead County, and works about 50 miles around Jonesboro. Cross County sits inside that circle, and we come over from Monette for land clearing in and around Wynne. We also handle forestry mulching, bush hogging, dirt work and gravel driveways. Call (870) 351-5107 and we will come look at the property.

Wynne sits between the Arkansas Delta and Crowley's Ridge. It is the largest city in Cross County and the county seat, with 8,314 people at the 2020 Census. In Cross County the ridge stands 75 to 100 feet above the floodplains on either side.
The ridge is capped with loess, a soil that erodes very easily. That is why so much of the ridge is steep slopes and deep valleys. The woods up there are oak and hickory, mixed with American beech, sugar maple and tuliptree.
Bare loess on a slope washes in a hard rain. Ridge soils need a cover of grass or forest to hold against erosion. Our drum mulcher grinds brush, saplings and small trees into mulch that stays on the ground as cover. Larger timber we look at with you on the estimate.
The low ground is farm country. Cross County is one of the state's leading producers of soybeans and rice. Cotton grows in the lowlands too, and the ridge holds apple, peach and pecan orchards.
Brush usually takes hold first where the mower does not reach: ditch banks, fence rows and field corners. Around houses and outbuildings, brush clearing takes out the vines, thickets and saplings. On the ridge, a cleared lot left alone tends to head back toward woods. How fast depends on the lot, the shade and what was cut.
A pass with the brush cutter each fall keeps grass and briars knocked down. Saplings that got past cutting height go through the drum mulcher. On farm and hunting ground, pasture and fence line clearing opens a fence row so a fence can be rebuilt. We cut shooting lanes and trails the same way.
On March 31, 2023, an EF3 tornado with winds up to 150 miles per hour struck Wynne. Hard wind and ice bring down ridge timber and yard trees. For storm cleanup we cut up downed trees and grapple the debris into piles. It goes out on the dump trailer, and driveways and lots get opened back up first.
Building on a ridge lot or a lot in town starts with lot clearing. We take out the brush and small trees, rough grade with the skid steer and haul off the debris. The builder's excavator digs the foundation from there.
Anyone who will be disturbing the ground is required to contact Arkansas 811 first. The call is free, and utility companies have two working days to locate their lines. Then the dirt work can start: grading, spreading fill or topsoil and shaping the yard.
We come over from Monette on AR 18 west to Jonesboro, then take AR 1 south to Harrisburg. From there AR 1 runs 25 miles south to Wynne. It passes Cherry Valley, which sits in northern Cross County at the western edge of the ridge.
Wynne grew up as a railroad town. The county seat moved here from Vanndale in 1903. US 64 and AR 1 cross in town. The Crowley's Ridge Parkway, a National Scenic Byway, runs through Wynne too.
South of town, Village Creek State Park covers almost 7,000 acres of the ridge. It is the second-largest state park in Arkansas, with Lake Austell and Lake Dunn inside it. The parkway forms the park's western boundary, and wooded land near the park sits on the same ridge.
Past the ridge, the St. Francis River drains the eastern third of the county. Parkin sits on the east side of that river, in the heart of the Delta. We work the county roads out there too, along with Vanndale, Fair Oaks, Hickory Ridge, Levesque and Wittsburg.
